Secrets
of the Talking Jaguar: Memoirs from the Living Heart of a Mayan Village
by Martin Prechtel
Though slow going at first, this book is worth the journey.
It takes you deep into the heart of contemporary Mayan shamanic practice.
I found gems in each chapter of Prechtel's account of his thirteen
years as an apprentice as shaman in the jungles of Guatemala. There is a lot of wisdom in these pages. Review by Tom Crockett |

Amazon
Magic : The Life Story of Ayahuasquero & Shaman Don Agustin Rivas
Vasquezby Jaya Bear
Amazon Magic tells the life story of Don Agustin
Rivas Vasquez, an ayahuaquero, a shaman skilled in the use of ayahuasca,
a visionary and healing plant medicine. Told in his own words, Amazon
Magic describes incidents from his childhood in a small jungle town
beside the Amazon River, and his early and present day experiences
with the plant medicine ayahuasca. The book recounts his days of being
lost in the remote depths of the jungle which resulted in his living
a year with an Indian tribe. This book provides a fascinating look
into the cultural life of the Peruvian Amazon as seen through the
eyes of someone who is an integral part of this life, and provides
a rare insight into the forces that helped shape the life of a profound
healer who is now highly regarded in many parts of the world |

The
Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight : Waking Up to Personal and Global
Transformation by Thom Hartmann
Ecology and spirituality are deftly intertwined in this well-written
discussion of how we can save and preserve life on earth. Vermont
author Thom Hartman offers a highly persuasive argument for adopting
the spiritual values of our ancient ancestors, which means living
with a strong connection to the earth as well as the sun that nourishes
us all. Nowadays, humans often perceive themselves as separate from
nature and born to dominate it, says Hartman who lays out some frightening,
albeit thorough, research on the destruction of the planet. ...click

Shamanic
Wisdomkeepers by Timothy Freke
This is
an interesting collection of interviews with a diverse group of
shamans and shamanic practitioners from around the world.
Freke does an admirable job of focusing on people who are practicing
shamans that live and work around the world. His interviews
include Medicine Cards and Sacred Path Cards creator
Jamie Sams, African Shaman and ceremonialist, Malidoma Patrice Some,
and the author of Secrets of the Talking Jaguar, Martin Prechtel.
The other shamans aare somewhat less known, but more interesting
for it. Freke keeps his subjects focused on what they believe
and how it impacts on their practices. The only thing I found
myself wishing for were illustrations that related specifically
to the subjects being interviewed. Aside from the portraits
of the shamans that began each chapter, the color photographs are
generic images from the cultures or parts of the world being discussed.
Still, it is a good read and contains a lot of useful information.

The
Healing Wisdom of Africa: Finding Life Purpose Through nature, Ritual,
and Community by Malidoma Patrice Some
Through The Healing Wisdom of Africa, readers can come to understand
that the life of indigenous and traditional people is a paradigm for
an intimate relationship with the natural world that both surrounds
us and is within us. The book is the most complete study of the role
ritual plays in the lives of African people--and the role it can play
for seekers in the West. |
