With the mission to ?lay naked before the world the true meaning of chocolate,? David Wolfe and Shazzie present a spirited and unconventional history, materia medica, and recipe book for the world?s most pleasurable food: chocolate. This book describes the wonders of cacao?where it comes from, how it is processed, its three varieties, and its origins and role in pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas.
A very unusual book...the results are coherent and timely, adding a different voice to concerns over enviromental degradation. Trees are highly rhythmical and the book makes clear that we disturbed many of their rhythms' -- The Scientific & Medical Network, Winter 2009/10
Peruvian Shamanism - The Pachakuti Mesa by Matthew Magee. From the back cover of the Book: There is an inherent human urge to explore and understand the mysteries of the universe and to discover the role we play within it. In addition, there has also been a consistent inner call to dive into the depths of our hearts, to explore human potential, and to live as examples of authenticity and truth. The Pachakuti Mesa is a personal alter used ceremonially to access spiritual forces and energies for the purposes of healing, the advancement of consciousness, and the restoration of balance on both individual and collective levels. This system of medicine work stems from the Earth-based shamanic practice of Northern Coastal and Southeastern Andean regions of Peru. Ultimately, the Pachakuti Mesa acts as the shamans's tool, an instrument of sacred technology, which is used to access and cultivate an intimate relationship with Spirit, which in its nature is mystery.

The quest for enlightenment has occupied mankind for millennia. And from the depictions we’ve seen—monks sitting on meditation cushions, nuns kneeling in prayer, shamans communing with the universe—it seems that this elusive state is reserved for a chosen few. But now, neuroscientist David Perlmutter and medical anthropologist and shaman Alberto Villoldo have come together to explore the commonalities between their specialties with the aim of making enlightenment possible for anyone.
During an expedition to the Andes more than twenty-five years ago, Alberto discovered a group of healers who specialized in treating illness before it manifested in the physical body. They worked not on the physical body itself, but on the Luminous Energy Field surrounding it. The Luminous Energy Field is the blueprint that shaped and molded us since we were inside of our mothers' wombs. It encodes how we live, how we age, how we heal, and how we might die. It contains the memories of all our former lifetimes -- the way we suffered, the way we loved, how we were ill, and the way we died.
Alberto Villoldo, a classically trained medical anthropologist, has studied shamanic healing techniques among the descendants of the ancient Inkas for more than twenty years. In Shaman, Healer, Sage, he draws on his vast body of knowledge to create a practical and revolutionary program based on the traditional healing methods used by these shamans -- methods that, until now, have been inaccessible to most of the world.
Villoldo explains that central to shamanic healing is the concept of the Luminous Energy Field that is believed to surround our material bodies. His book teaches us to see and influence the imprints that disease leaves on this field and thereby to heal ourselves and others, as well as prevent illness.
Villoldo weaves wonderful teaching stories throughout about the healing power of the energy medicine of the Americas. In one story, Villoldo comes down with pneumonia while in Peru. When antibiotics fail to control the infection, his mentor, the shaman Don Antonio, uses the process of Illumination to remove the toxins that had invaded Villoldo's body. These same shamanic techniques later allowed Villoldo to remove stagnant energy from a young woman whose marriage was suffering due to her past experience with abandonment. With the aid of shamanic work, the woman regained her trust in others, and her marriage was revitalized.
This book is rich with ancient wisdom and contemporary techniques we can use to help ourselves and others, as well as with the more advanced methods of master shamans, which are being brought to a wide audience for the first time.
