Living Zen
The Detroit Zen Center is a residential community of monks and students who practice daily meditation, manual work and arts. Zen is not a religion, but a way of life that seeks truth. Resident students work daily in exchange for room, board & a small stipend. They practice meditation, sustainable life, & help create a unique, grassroots Center alongside the monks and full-time students. Non-resident students attend meditations, work projects, & teachings.
Located in a diverse city-district (Hamtramck) in the center of Detroit, the Zen Center began with the effort of our teacher & abbot Hwalson Sunim. They practice Lin-chi Zen, and are a branch of Sudeok-sa Temple, South Korea.
To support the Center and their Green Neighborhood Projects, they operate an on-site raw-vegan cafe/ store featuring local organic food, and sell our goods at Michigan stores and farmers' markets. Our businesses are part of this non-profit organization.
