Maca is a nutritious root of ancestral consumption from the heart of the Cordillera de los Andes Mountain range of Peru. Maca grows in an inhospitable region of intense sunlight, violent winds, and below-freezing weather. With its extreme temperatures and poor, rocky soil; yet, over the centuries, maca has evolved to flourish under these conditions. Maca was domesticated about 2,000 years ago by the Incas, and primitive cultivars of maca have been found in archaeological sites dating as far back as 1600 B.C. Because of it's powerful nourishing properties it was one of the most important resources for nourishment in pre-Inkan and Inkan times. 

Our Black Maca is gelatinized. The gelatinization process removes the starches from the maca which increases its digestibility. It also makes it about 15% more concentrated than raw organic maca. In additonal to all Maca's benefits one unique attribute of Black Maca is that it has been shown in the medical study to increase sperm production.  Other Black Maca specific benefits are listed below.

Additional Unique Benefits of Black Maca: 

  • Black maca has better effects on sperm production than yellow maca which has only moderate effects.
  • Red and black maca have protective effects on bone architecture in OVX rats without showing estrogenic effects on uterine weight.
  • Black maca beneficial compounds have a positive effects on sperm production. Antioxidant components could play a role in the effect of increased epididymal sperm concentration.

General Maca Information

Maca's nutritional properties are incredible. Maca contains... tons of amino acids, including all the essential and many non-essential amino acids (a more-than-complete protein). Maca has high concentrations of B vitamins (which are often hard to come by in a vegetarian diet). Maca has incredible mineral richness, most notably with high levels of calcium (but also magnesium, phosphorous, etc.). Importantly, maca has a wide and balanced mineral profile. Minerals notoriously need other minerals in order to be absorbed well in the body (which is why calcium and iron supplements are so useless), and maca is one of few vegetarian foods (along with wheatgrass, spirulina, sea weed, etc.) that has the kind of broad spectrum and concentration of minerals to allow for total absorption of all the minerals. In addition, maca has a rare chemical (not an alkaloid) that allows for a tremendous increase in calcium absorption across the board. Not to mention tons of vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants.

In addition to the calcium-absorption properties mentioned, maca has a property that helps dramatically in the digestion of carbohydrates, which is vital to the starch-rich diet of the Andes. Maca is an adaptogen, meaning it works with the body to either raise or lower many metabolic functions based on what the body needs. In other words, it is impossible to over-dose with maca, because the plant can adjust up or down.  Maca has been shown to feed the endocrine system (which is like the physical body version of the chakras).  In the Andes, maca is also used as a general tonic for strength, circulation, and overall well-being. Because maca feeds the life-force-related adrenal glands, many Andeans drink maca in the morning. Though it is NOT a stimulant, the effect is a natural wake up call to the whole organism.

In general terms Maca's ethnomedical uses in Peru are for anemia, energy, fertility, food impotence, memory, menopause, menstrual disorders and tuberculosis to name a few.
