Quick Overview:

(Burseara Graveolens) Palo Santo or "Holy Stick" is a natural wood aromatic incense used for centuries by the Incas and indigenous people of the Andes as a spiritual remedy for purifying and cleansing, as well as to get rid of evil spirits and misfortune. as well as for medicinal purposes. It has a fine citrus aroma with underlying notes of frankincense, its close relative. It is often used by shamans in sacred plant spirit ceremonies. Our Palo Santo is sustainably wild harvested from a reserve in Ecuador from naturally fallen trees and branches that lie dead for 4-10 yrs. before they are harvested. We sell it by weight which roughly translates to 10-15 semi-uniform sticks per package approximately 4 in. long and 1/4 to 1/2 in. diameter.

Details

In the ethno-botanical systems of the Andes Palo Santo is also used: as an insect repellent, as a feline stimulant (similar to catnip),for colds, asthma, allergies, stress, anxiety, sea sickness, migraine, arthritis, neck aces, cervical pain, meditation and relaxation.

Unlike conventional incense which burns completely after lighting, Palo Santo may be relit many times. When lighting, allow the wood to burn to less than a minute, then blow the flame out. Palo Santo may be re-lit many times.

A portion of the sales price goes to help replant these endangered trees.

I really love this product and have ordered it several times now from SM. It is a wonderful way to begin the day in the morning...allowing one's self to feel awakened by the aroma of this lovely fragrance. My friends all love these Palo Santo sticks too :o) (Posted on 3/25/13)

I fell in love with the smell while vacationing in South America. Only problem is I couldn't remember the name of the wood. As soon as I found out, I ordered ASAP. Love 'em! (Posted on 11/3/12)

This product has a very nice, cleansing aroma that is not overpowering. It burns clean and for a long time. There are quite a few sticks in the package and it is bound to last for a reasonable amount of time. (Posted on 11/3/12)

This stuff is great. It become rather addictive to burn it. Once you start the smell is just wonderful. The real stuff just like in Peru. (Posted on 11/3/12)

Let it burn for about a minute, then blow the flame out. The resulting smoke is a warm, sweet, woodsy kind of fragrance that can gently fill a room without being too overwhelming. These small pieces of wood do not slow burn for a lengthy period of time as incense sticks will; after the flame is blown out, palo santo sticks will smolder and smoke for about a minute or two, then self-extinguish. However, the pieces can be re-lit, repeatedly. I bought several packages and will definitely buy more soon. (Posted on 11/3/12)

because this stuff's not nearly as fragrant as Peruvian Palo Santo. Will not buy again (Item was shipped fast though). (Posted on 11/3/12)

Wonderful and perfect as always. Burns very slowly and goes out quickly, but not so quickly that you can't fill the house with the wonderful aroma by walking around holding the stick like you would a sage bundle (I don't BUY bundles of sage since it grows wild here and I'ma wildcrafter.) I would recommend this product to everyone! (Posted on 11/3/12)

Overall
These sticks are a pretty great alternative to incense - the sticks aren't processed at all, are aesthetically pleasing, have a great smell, & last significantly longer than incense.
Someone in a previous review asked "how do you keep them burning, mine seem to go out after about 10 seconds?"
Well first of all, if you want it to smoke longer, you have to keep it lit and get hotter before you blow it out - that way it'll smoke for longer. That being said, it's not supposed to smoke for the extent of the stick like a piece of incense might when lit. This is, after all, a piece of wood - and it acts accordingly. So while it may not smoke longer than a few minutes if very hot, it will produce A LOT of smoke/scent in that amount of time. The smell is like a cedar honey coconut fireplace - without smelling fake. A relaxing wood fire smell with a twist - very calming.

I've given many of my friends a stick or two and they all reeeally enjoyed them and asked how to get more. (Posted on 11/3/12)
