Quick Overview:

A rustic and exceptional carved mortar and pestle set hand crafted in Peru.  This piece comes to us from the home of a private collector. A serpent in scaley skin circles the flat upper rim.  The carved pestle also shows the individual scales.  The bowl has two handles protruding from either side and a carved jaguar's head protrudes from the front, mouth open and baring his teeth. Shamans use these to grind resin incense for sprinkling onto charcoal or for preparations of medicaments used in ceremony or healings.

Detailed Information:
  • Hand Made

Mortar and pestle sets have been used in the preparation of food since prehistoric times. The set consists of the mortar - a bowl usually made of some sort of stone or hard wood, into which a food or other item is placed. The pestle - a bat shaped piece of stone or wood - is then used to mill the material in the mortar by pounding or grinding.
