Om Gallery works with family industries in Asia and around the world. We promote fair trade, condemn demonic working conditions and enjoy helping Cooperative Cottage Industries in developing countries. Every article of Om Gallery merchandise is handmade by one of our many families of tailors, cobblers, lantern makers and lamp makers. We enjoy many meals with our partners, many laughs and the satisfaction of knowing that everything we make is handmade with an agreed price that is profitable to our partners. Many people ask about how or where our merchandise is made and under what conditions. Well, our friends name a cost for our design and then the entire family and their partners go to work. In 2002 three of our partner families built new homes and workshops to employ more villagers. These partners are all very good personal friends of ours and our survival depends on each other, therefore making us closer and trusting.
$1 for every lamp sold helps fund educational opportunities for our artisans, workers and their children through the Om Gallery Education Fund - OMGEF.
This item was made in Pananque, Philippines under the guidance of the Navoa family. Single capiz shells are extracted by hand and individually placed in the handcrafted metal frame of the lotus flower candle holder by craftsmen who then polish, paint and lacquer each individual piece until it glows with color and vibrancy. The family business supports many talented artists and craftsmen, giving them an opportunity to make a living.
The Symbol of the Lotus
Lotuses are symbols of purity and 'spontaneous' generation and hence symbolize divine birth. According to the Lalitavistara, 'the spirit of the best of men is spotless, like the new lotus in the [muddy] water which does not adhere to it', and, according to esoteric Buddhism, the heart of the beings is like an unopened lotus: when the virtues of the Buddha develop therein the lotus blossoms. This is why the Buddha sits on a lotus in bloom. In Tantrism, it is the symbol of the feminine principle. The lotuses are usually differentiated by their color and grouping, in three or five flowers, which may or may not be combined with leaves.
