Pacific Coast, Ecuador
Palo Santo, Bursera Graveolens, is an aromatic tree native to the Galapagos Islands and the dry forests of South America. In traveling along the coastline of South America’s Pacific coast from Northern Peru to Ecuador one is captured by the perfume of Palo Santo. If you follow the perfume trail you’ll reach the Machalilla National Park, located in the Province of Manabi, on the coastline of Ecuador, where you will find the biggest concentration of Palo Santo trees in all of South America. As in Peru, the Palo Santo tree in Ecuador is protected by the national government and can only be harvested under strict conditions. Shamans Market supports these sustainable practices through its association with Deltatau Palo Santo Foundation of Manabi. When walking the trails of the Machalilla National Park with the sun at its peak, the brackish air from the ocean fills up with the aroma of the Palo Santo resin and you are filled with a sense of peace and tranquility.
The name Palo Santo means "Holy Wood", and what a fitting name that is. The magic of Palo Santo is in the alchemical process that happens after the death of a limb or a tree. You see, in order for the Palo Santo to gain its magical and medicinal properties it must die, but not just any death – only a natural death of a wise old limb or tree. The Palo Santo trees live for 80 to 90 years. After this death the tree must remain in its natural habitat for 4 to 10 years to complete its metamorphosis. Only then do its sacred, medicinal and mystical properties come alive.
Palo Santo has been used for thousands of years in Peru and Ecuador by shamans and healers. Travel today through the Andes Mountains you still find shamans, curanderos, and healers using Palo Santo as part of their ceremonies and healing rituals, evidence that its use more alive than ever in their culture. Increasingly the healing properties of Palo Santo are finding its way into the rest of the world as one of the truly great resins of Mother Earth. It has capacities in both physical and metaphysical realms. Palo Santo has even caught the attention of western scientific researchers for it chemical properties which include limonene and monterpenes that are being studied for their anti cancer effects. It’s truly amazing that this “Holy Wood” can at once, through its healing scent and sacred smoke, provide energetic protection, remove bad energy, uplift the spirit and bring good luck as well as repel mosquitoes and treat a headache.*
The creator of Shaman 999 Palo Santo Oil is an alchemist, with a deep spiritual connection to the Palo Santo tree. Dante has done as much for the continued propagation of this tree in the Ecuadorian forest as a man can do, working with the government to ensure its continued reforestation for years to come. The positive impact made from the operations which create the oil is a model for sustainability. Not only is this oil eco-friendly, it is fairly traded, supports local economy and has empowered women by providing opportunities not traditionally available to them. As much as Dante embraces the tree, it seems to hug him back, given his continued good luck in propagating saplings and the creation of stellar products. And the cycle continues with part of the proceeds from this oil being given back to the sustainability of the forest.
Long regarded as spiritual oil, Palo Santo oil was used during the time of the Incas for its reputed spiritual purifying properties. Palo Santo oil traditionally has been used for repelling insects, treating flu, cold cough asthma and allergies, treating psoriasis, acne, wounds and sprains, arthritis, neck pain and muscle aches. Today, Palo Santo oil is considered for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial qualities. The use of the oil supports states of calmness and relaxation beneficial during meditation, concentration and for enhancing creativity and learning. It can be used to release negative energy and purify the spirit.
The name bestowed on this special edition fragrant oil, Shamans 999, has significance in two ways. First, shamans in places where the tree grows, and now in other places as well, have long used the wood of the Palo Santo tree (Bursera graveolens) in their sacred practices, rituals and ceremonies, so the word shaman was included. The name also contains the use of the primary number 9. The number was selected to reflect certain unique characteristics of its creation, which yields 9 liters; is processed at a temperature of 99 degrees and uses 90 kilograms of the highest quality Palo Santo sprigs from branches closet to heaven. In addition this number in used for it metaphysical significance. The number 9 has long been associated in mythology with travel to an underworld for various kinds of realization or purification and then to be raised up to the heavens and reborn.
Shaman 999 - Alignment/Love 2014 was created over the auspicious first 6 days of January 2014. On January 1, the beginning of a new calendar year we experienced the lunar influences of a new moon. Then on January 4, Earth reached perihelion, the point in its elliptical orbit when it’s closest to the sun. On January 5, the alignment of the Sun-Earth-Jupiter occurred.
Day 6 dawned with one of Dante’s eight rosewood trees, all nine years old, covered in flowers. It was the only tree that flowered this year, bearing small white star-like flowers illuminating the dark night of the new moon. The rosewood flowers were included with the Palo Santo wood in the oil batch, representing the union of new life and death, protection for life and against darkness.
The combination of astrological and botanical events which occurred during the batch process were unique. Strictly and technically speaking, the combining of the wood and plant material does not allow for the resulting product to be classified as 100% pure essential oil. Still, the combination of the new moon, dark night, white flowers, planetary alignment and the heat of the close by sun is an irresistible combination.
And like all his sustainably farmed products, this one was made with good and holy intention. The meditation offered for this batch was “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself. Love is always the answer.” Supplies of this special oil are limited and once it’s gone, it’s gone.
We have packaged this special oil in an equally special bottle. Miron Glass of Switzerland’s Violet Glass AG bottle. This biophotonic bottle uses technology rediscovered from similar jars found in the pyramids. This bottle completely blocks the complete spectrum of visible light and allows a certain UV-A and infra-red light that scientific research has shown to protect and enhance the oils natural therapeutic potential.
We are pleased to have the opportunity to make this special oil available to you.
For every liter of Palo Santo oil that we purchase, we donate $30 to help replant these endangered trees. For each donation, one hundred and eighty trees are planted!
