Plant Essence of Chicory
Linda CriderIntroduction
Those who live in the northern hemisphere have recently celebrated the Cross Quarter of Imbolc. This marks the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox when more plant activity is happening underground than above it. Seeds start to quietly germinate, and the hardy tap roots of perennials such as Chicory reach out and stretch to begin their growth cycle in the weeks to come.
Chicory's Resilient Nature and Medicinal Uses
Like its botanical cousin Dandelion, Chicory’s medicine is found most intensely in the root, and the entire plant is a sturdy one that even thrives in the unfriendliest soil. Solar Flora now offers such a resonance of adaptability in the form of a Chicory plant essence. This popular type of plant therapy allows us to benefit from the higher frequency gently offered by plants in a subtle but effective way that the body recognizes on a vibrational or quantum level.
Culinary Applications of Chicory
In natural food circles, it’s well known how cultivated Chicory roots are dried and crushed to be used as a coffee substitute, or mixed with ground coffee beans to produce a milder, less caffeinated beverage. However, Chicory (Cichorium intybus) grows wild in many parts of the world, and the energetic signature in the root eventually finds its way up to the attractive, cerulean flower, a distinctive member of the daisy family.
Chicory's Synchronization with Nature
As with many flowering plants, Chicory blooms in sync with the forces of nature by opening and closing according to the rising and setting of the sun. It’s believed that the flower has the ability to purify and protect the body and mind, helping to dispel any unfavorable energy that interferes with inner peace. These charming blossoms usually present themselves in captivating shades of blue, the color most associated with serenity. This, along with the grounding quality of a base so deeply rooted in the earth, makes the plant one that assists in such practices as prayer, meditation, and connecting to spiritual guidance.
Folklore and Cultural Significance
Chicory, or “Succory,” as it is sometimes called, has been used over time for both physical and spiritual healing in several cultures. Folklore surrounding this plant says that collecting it with a “golden knife” in midsummer at noon or midnight intensifies its otherworldly properties. On a more mundane level, nutritionists now recognize that the plant contains inulin, a prebiotic substance important for gut health. However, it was long ago familiar to the Egyptians as a digestive aid that they referred to as “the liver’s friend.” The Romans added young Chicory leaves to salads in much the same way as many enjoy Dandelion’s spiky leaves, despite (or maybe because of) the bitter taste that promotes optimal digestion.
Chicory in Bach Flower Remedies
Chicory grows easily and abundantly in the United Kingdom. Dr. Edward Bach, creator of the 38 Bach Flower Remedy healing system nearly 100 years ago, included this flower as one of his original Twelve Healers. He recommended its balancing essence for emotionally needy individuals who express an overbearing love and concern for others by controlling behaviors. Bach practitioners claim that taking this flower remedy can liberate such an enslaved personality and restore emotional autonomy.
Personal Independence and Resilience
Personal independence and endurance seem to be the outstanding qualities that Chicory is valued for. The plant’s hardy nature is demonstrated by the insistence to complete its life cycle with perseverance and, most significantly, resilience. For this reason, it’s considered an invasive species in some parts of North America. However, when you consider the positive side of such a persistent growth pattern, you can see why legend suggests that giving someone Chicory in any form may help them get through a difficult phase.
Exploring Chicory's Spirit through Meditation
With this in mind, I wanted to access the spirit of Chicory by using the plant essence, but with a different perspective. Instead of posing a general question as to what the spirit of this plant may wish to share, I thought I’d approach it with a specific request. Since there’s overwhelming evidence that we all are living in challenging times, I began this practice with the intention of asking how we can embody this plant’s perseverance and resiliency. I was asking for suggestions on how to best manage disruptive energy and deal with personal as well as global challenges in ways that bring about a constructive outcome.
Preparation for the Meditation
I prepared for this meditation by taking four drops of the Chicory plant essence, at least three times a day for three days. This daily dose is a suggested one, but the appeal of plant essences is that they are a form of healing medicine that can’t be overdosed and don’t interfere with other medications. They may be taken long term or on an as-needed basis for an unspecified number of times. The only response that could be remotely considered a “side effect” is the occasional possibility of what is called a healing crisis. This occurs when negative energy is brought to the surface, seemingly intensified, and finally neutralized to transform the individual into a more balanced, positive state.
Engaging in the Meditation
Just before I began the meditation, I took another three drops of Chicory plant essence internally. Then I gently rubbed a few drops on my wrists to open what is called the spirit gate of the heart meridian. I settled into a quiet space and did my best to clear my consciousness of any preconceptions. Whenever I do a plant spirit journey, I always remind myself to expect the unexpected, or better yet, to not have any expectations at all! This time, I worked with a guided meditation I was given that was meant specifically to prepare my mind and energy field for communicating with the plants.
Insights Gained from Chicory's Spirit
The overarching spirit of Chicory felt like a soothing but strong presence, and the message I was given was brief and simple. I was told to cultivate and value strength and endurance, but to always balance this with an awareness of beauty. This can be done by visualizing the root chakra, which extends down into the earth, and connecting it to the crown chakra, which extends upward to the heavens. In other words, keep the feet on the ground while, at the same time, the head in the clouds. I was told that one way to do this is to take time each day to appreciate something beautiful, whether it be a work of art, a piece of music, or a simple flower. This practice can help to balance the strength and resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
When I thought about it afterwords, I had to admit that following this advice is easy to follow on a regular basis, but may be just as easy to forget in light of the constant distractions of everyday life!
While exploring ways to improve this meditative practice, I’ve recently learned how interacting with plant energy involves focusing on the exchange of breath between myself and the plant, and I was careful to do this during my meeting with Chicory. We humans breath in the same air that plants in turn breath out, and this has always been a continuous process whether it be with houseplants, wildflowers or trees in the forest.
Being mindful of this interchange is key to recognizing the importance of our connection to the plant world and extends to all of nature. Such a focus is what plant spirit healer Pam Montgomery refers to as inspiring “unity consciousness,” a path to healing ourselves as well as the earth. Working with plant essences is a timely way to participate in this co-creation, and Chicory is among the many plants who offer their assistance.
Conclusion
Incorporating the essence of Chicory into daily life can offer a unique blend of resilience and appreciation for beauty. By grounding ourselves like the deep roots of the Chicory plant and opening up to the serenity symbolized by its blue flowers, we can navigate challenges with strength and grace. Whether through meditation, plant essences, or simply observing the Chicory in nature, embracing its spirit can lead to a more balanced and enriched life experience.
