Color therapy or chromatherapy is the practice of treating bodily disharmonies with color and/or light, in the seven primary colors of the rainbow. It is based on the premise that specific colors have healing and restorative properties related to certain areas of the physical or emotional being. For example, the color orange creates balance. In terms of subtle bodies, it is linked to the mental body in both its logical and conceptual form. It is used to increase immunity, to increase sexual potency, and to help in all digestive ailments, chest and kidney diseases. Orange will have a gentle warming effect. There is evidence of belief in the power of colors in Ancient Egyptian times, where houses were built with colored panes of glass in the roof, through which the sun could shine and treat the patient sitting inside.
In traditional Chinese medicine, each organ is associated with a color. The practice of qijong links healing sounds with color. Ayurvedic medicine in India dates back thousands of years and embraces the belief that every person contains the same five basic elements of the universe: air, water, fire, earth and space. The proportions present in each individual, is directly related to their personality and nature. When these elements are thrown out of balance by willful act or illness, Ayurvedic medicine employs the energy inherent in the colors of the spectrum, to restore harmony. Ayurvedic medicine describes the body as having seven main chakras, which are spiritual centers located along the spinal column that are associated with a color, function and organ or bodily system. According to this explanation, these colors can become imbalanced and result in physical diseases, but these imbalances can be corrected through using the appropriate color as a treatment.
On his website, Dr. Oz mentions, "If you have trouble sleeping, consider sleep light therapy, which is based on maintaining your body's natural circadian rhythm. Natural sunlight contains all the colors of the rainbow, including blue light, which helps us stay alert during the day. But if you’re around anything that emits blue light at night, such as TVs, computers or lamps, you can be kept awake. On the other hand, orange, the only color that contains no blue light, can help stimulate the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone."
