  • Smudging is a traditional Native American Indian method of burning herbs to produce a smoke cloud which is used in various cleansing or prayer ceremonies and purification or healing rituals. Cleansing rituals involving smudging often initiates healing sessions. The process of smudging enhances sensitivity and in some instances alters the state of consciousness enabling a Shaman, or Medicine Man, to assess and treat an illness. Smudging were an important place in Native American Spiritual Healing. The smoke was believed to disperse impurities allowing the healing process to commence. As the smoke rose it was believed that prayers would also rise to the Spirit World and negative thoughts and emotions were lifted away. Most of the herbs for smudging have antiseptic qualities and the process of burning herbs really does purify the air. Smudging rituals and ceremonies include rites of passage such as the Vision Quest and precursors to ceremonies such as the Sun Dance. The smudging rituals and ceremonies that involved healing were used in conjunction with various Native American Herbal Remedies. Tom Gray Elk Rael

Tom Gray Elk Rail is a Native American from Denver Colorado. Raised Hispanic and growing up speaking Spanish and English, it took a near death experience to bring him back to his American Indian roots. Today, Rael is affiliated with the Picuris Pueblo, "People of the Hidden Valley," and is an artist, flute player and story teller. He creates three-dimensional Native American artwork which utilizes the "energetic gifts" of the birds and animals. He is most well known for his smudge feathers….

Tom Gray Elk says he never kills a bird for feathers. To him, birds are sacred and have different meanings in Native American Indian culture - Turkey meaning wisdom, peacock good luck and pheasant prosperity. Rael sells different feather combinations designed to bring people the qualities each bird represents when they are used for smudging or praying.

Born and raised in Denver, Rael is a 1969 graduate of North High School. He graduated from the Engineering and drafting School of Denver in 1972 and was a cement contractor until 1987 when he and a group of four hunters including Rael thought he had successfully shot a bull elk, but as he neared the collapsed beast, it rose to full height and targeted Rael with its anger. He was hospitalized, told he might never walk again and opted for physical therapy rather than back surgery.

Rael had to give up his work as a contractor because of his new physical limitations and came home from the hospital in a wheelchair. While lying in bed one afternoon, he was called by a stranger who asked directions to his home. The person identified himself as a Native American Indian medicine man and arrived at Rael's home about two hours later carrying a bundle of herbs. He told Rael, "If you want to walk again then you must walk the path of your people." It was enough to make Rael start asking questions of his parents and later his grandfather, Juan Rael. His grandfather, who spoke five Indian languages as well as Spanish and English disclosed a family secret which had been hidden for three generations: the family was Indian-descendants of a Spaniard named Juan de Jesus Rael and the Picuris woman he married in 1754….Armed with the answers to his questions, Rael now understood the medicine man's words of wisdom. He began to walk what he calls a "spiritual path," exploring his heritage and native roots with tribal elders. The elders at Picuris gave him the name "Gray Elk" in remembrance of the elk in the forest. (Adapted from an Article by Nancy Clark of Emerging Markets magazine)
