The Buddha is draped in an antique red robe falling gracefully about his crossed legs. Mosaic pink and green glasswork and tiny mirrors on the robe contrast superbly with the black finish of the statue. Buddha's left hand facing upward, lies in his lap in Dhyana (meditation) Mudra. His right hand hangs over his knee, fingertips pointing to the ground in Bhumisparsha Mudra. These ceramic figures cuchimilcos are identified with the Chancay culture, developed between 1200 and 1470 in the central coast of Peru, and centered in the current Huaral province in the region of Lima. The cuchimilcos almost always come in male / female pairs representing the duality of God, a belief of the pre-Columbian cultures.
