Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens) has a pleasing citrus aroma with underlying notes of frankincense, its close relative, and has also been described as warm, delicately sweet, and rosy-woodsy. Our palo santo sticks are sustainably wild-harvested from naturally fallen trees and fallen branches that lay dead for 4-10 years before being harvested.

Palo Santo has been used as a natural wood incense for centuries by the Incas and Indigenous people of the South America. Shamans often use it in sacred plant-spirit ceremonies. Known as a spiritual remedy, to dissolve evil spirits and misfortune, and is used for medicinal purposes.

Burn for purifying and cleansing or simply for aroma pleasure! Choose the origin country and size. One-pound bags are compostable and the cotton drawstring bags are reusable.

Product Origin

  • South America

Palo Santo, Bursera Graveolens, is an aromatic tree native to the Galapagos Islands and the dry forests of South America. In traveling along the coastline of South America’s Pacific coast from Northern Peru to Ecuador one is captured by the perfume of Palo Santo. If you follow the perfume trail you’ll reach the Machalilla National Park, located in the Province of Manabi, on the coastline of Ecuador, where you will find the biggest concentration of Palo Santo trees in all of South America. As in Peru, the Palo Santo tree in Ecuador is protected by the national government and can only be harvested under strict conditions. Shamans Market supports these sustainable practices through its association with Deltatau Palo Santo Foundation of Manabi. When walking the trails of the Machalilla National Park with the sun at its peak, the brackish air from the ocean fills up with the aroma of the Palo Santo resin and you are filled with a sense of peace and tranquility.

Burning herbs and resins (aromatic tree sap) is one of the oldest form of incense. Long before there were sticks and cones, people would add fragrant botanicals to fire to create beautiful smelling smoke to entice their deities or to please themselves. It is believed this is one of the most powerful means of working with herbs to imbue a space, an object or a person with holy qualities.

The name Palo Santo means "Holy Wood", and what a fitting name that is. The magic of Palo Santo is in the alchemical process that happens after the death of a limb or a tree. You see, in order for the Palo Santo to gain its magical and medicinal properties it must die, but not just any death only a natural death of a wise old limb or tree. The Palo Santo trees live for 80 to 90 years. After this death the tree must remain in its natural habitat for 4 to 10 years to complete its metamorphosis. Only then do its sacred, medicinal and mystical properties come alive.

Palo Santo has been used for thousands of years in Peru and Ecuador by shamans and healers. Travel today through the Andes Mountains you still find shamans, curanderos, and healers using Palo Santo as part of their ceremonies and healing rituals, evidence that its use more alive than ever in their culture. Increasingly the healing properties of Palo Santo are finding its way into the rest of the world as one of the truly great resins of Mother Earth. It has capacities in both physical and metaphysical realms.

Palo Santo has even caught the attention of western scientific researchers for it chemical properties which include limonene and monterpenes that are being studied for their anti cancer effects. It is truly amazing that this Holy Wood can at once, through its healing scent and sacred smoke, provide energetic protection, remove bad energy, uplift the spirit and bring good luck as well as ethno-botanical uses.

BEFORE YOU BUY

There is some misunderstanding about Palo Santo and how it's supposed to burn. Every stick will burn, look, and smell differently depending on where in the tree it came from so don't expect consistency.

Oils Coming From The Wood?

Highly resinous heartwood may drip "oil" from the wood as you light it. (Think sap inside a tree) When lit on fire it heats the oils inside the wood and releases them and burns off. This creates the fragrance. This is normal. The more resin, the longer you’ll need to let it burn to ignite it properly as the resins burn off.

It doesn't mean it's been “dipped in oil” We would never do this!

We import our palo santo ourselves directly from our partners in Peru and Ecuador.  There are no additives. These are the natural resins inherent in the wood itself.

Dark Smoke?

The other common question is about dark smoke when on fire. Some assume this implies that it was dipped in oil. Not correct.

When you first light the wood it will burn with a black smoke as it is on fire. Once you blow it out you will see the white “cleansing and fragrant” smoke. The heartwood pieces may even look waxy and burn extra dark but are usually the most fragrant.

Won’t Stay Lit?

Sacred Plants are mostly used for a quick cleansing or ritual and aren’t meant to burn and stay lit for long. You can re-light any time and reuse the stick. To increase smoke time, you can leave it flaming for slightly longer to get an ember going, or you can use a feather to fan the ember. Another option is to place the palo santo wood stick on a Swiftlite self-lighting charcoal.

If you’re looking for a Palo Santo Incense that stays lit, we recommend our Palo Santo Cones or Palo Santo Incense Sticks.

living a life of intention and service to our community, our planet, and our fellow humans

Our journey started long ago in 1999, when a small group of close friends began learning the wisdoms of the people in the Andes. Shamanic practices, yes. But also the soulful way in which the people view and interact with the world.

When our founders took trips down to Peru, they often got asked to bring back certain items like Agua de Florida, Palo Santo, Khuyas, etc for their community. That was over 20 years ago.

Shamans Market was birthed into being as an offering for community and friends. Providing them with resources for spiritual growth. While providing our friends in the states with resources for spiritual growth, we were simultaneously providing a vehicle to financial security to our friends and their families in the Andes.

Being stewards of the earth and maintaining natural balance plays a significant role in how we run our business. We’ve essentially translated our personal worldview - living a life of intention and service to our community, our planet, and our fellow humans - into THE model for our business.

We aim to provide offerings to live in harmony with each other & our earth.

The nature of our business is thoughtful and centered on serving as a resource to YOU. From those just starting out into the practices associated with our products, and also a trusted, reliable source of goods for those who have been with us perhaps before the beginning.

We hope our products and resources are directly impacting the world in a meaningful, mindful way by helping others to reshape their worldview in new ways.

Energy Conservation and Recycling

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. At Shamans Market, we are always looking for ways to reduce our use of resources and reuse and recycle every step of the way.

Through our participation in the MIGreenPower renewable energy program, Shamans Market is directly supporting the development of new renewable energy projects in Michigan. Thus, supporting the development, construction, and ongoing maintenance/operation of our local wind and solar parks.

Our participation helps to put more clean energy onto the power grid. By making a commitment to go 100 percent renewable through the program, it reduces our carbon footprint associated with electricity use.

We reuse or recycle our cardboard, paper and packaging materials. Very little goes to waste. Many of the materials are reused in our packaging and shipping, and much of what is not, is recycled.

When purchasing supplies we are conscience of finding eco-friendly, recycled or recyclable materials for our office, warehouse use, and packaging materials.

Packaging & Shipping

Whenever possible we use recycled or recyclable products for the products we package and ship. From plant based cello bags for some of our sage and incense products to peanuts that are biodegradable we constantly have an eye out for making our products and packaging earth friendly.

✓ In shipping our products to you here are some of the ways we keep our shipping eco-friendly:

✓ Use appropriate sized recyclable or recycled cardboard boxes and 100% recycled padded paper envelopes

✓ Purchase 100% recycled/recycleable kraft paper for package void fill

✓ Use Geami’s GreenWrap instead of bubble packaging and foam peanuts. Its benefits:

• 100% recyclable, biodegradable and compostable

• Easy for you to recycle in curbside recycling bins

• Made with raw materials from sustainably managed forests & producers

✓ Wrap our products in tissue paper instead of plastic when possible

✓ Print packing slips on at least 50% recycled paper

✓ Purchase only 100% plant based compostable peanuts

✓ Reuse: Paper, boxes and peanuts that we receive product in. This sometimes means you may receive petroleum based packaging. Although we never purchase it we do reuse it. So if you get petroleum based peanuts or bubble wrap you recycle it. Hint: UPS Stores will take your peanuts for you. Find my recycling options at: at www.earth911.com .

Carbon Offset Shipping

Shamans Market has teamed up with  Camino Verde, a non-profit organization working to preserve the Peruvian Amazon. We are offering our customers the opportunity to offset greenhouse gases produced in shipping your order. Your $2 contribution will go to planting and maintaining endangered jungle hardwood trees that absorb carbon dioxide while protecting biodiversity and to preserving virgin rainforest .

The process of collecting carbon in forests, soils, geological formations and other carbon “sinks” is called carbon sequestration. Native trees and forests help fight climate change as part of their natural processes. As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into oxygen.

Camino Verde (“the green path”) is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization whose work is based in the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. It is the primary mission of Camino Verde to plant trees and encourage others to do the same. Their programs and presence in several small communities in the Tambopata River basin have focused on promoting the planting and preservation of trees as a source of sustainable income and economic empowerment to small scale subsistence farmers. Migratory agriculture is the number one cause of deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon.

It is their vision to reduce the impact of human populations on wild forests through the improved economic opportunities provided by long-term perennial reforestation and agroforestry.

Camino Verde is committed to upholding the strictest standards of sustainability, integrity, transparency, and simplicity in order to realize our goals. It is our belief that the most powerful solutions are usually simple– and always direct. In the pursuit of “beyond sustainability,” the natural world is the inspiration and model for the solutions we create. Camino Verde at a glance:

✓ Over 10,000 trees planted, representing 250 species, as part of our Living Seed Bank

✓ 180 acres (75 hectares) of rainforest under Camino Verde ownership

✓ 1600 acres (640 hectares) more protected through our conservation partnerships

✓ Over 4500 trees planted with 20 partner farmers through our Basic Agroforestry project

For more information on Camino Verde and the great things they are doing, please visit: www.caminoverdeperu.org

Eco Friendly Products

Many of the products we sell are eco-friendly. You can easily spot these items by the green eco-friendly icon on the product page. What does eco-friendly mean? Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. This term most commonly refers to products that contribute to green living, or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products also prevent contributions to air, water and land pollution. You can engage in eco-friendly habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources.

Product Qualifications
Making a truly eco-friendly product keeps both environmental and human safety in mind. At a minimum, the product is non-toxic. Other eco-friendly attributes include the use of sustainably grown or raised ingredients, produced in ways that do not deplete the ecosystem. Organic ingredients or materials are grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. Products with “made from recycled materials” contain glass, wood, metal or plastic reclaimed from waste products and made into something new. Biodegradable products break down through natural decomposition, which is less taxing on landfills and the ecosystem as a whole.
