    Teomati

Teomati Sacred Copal’s story is a love story.  Adrián, the founder, grew up in close acquaintance with the cleansing, protective, and guiding effects of copal in Mexico and was eager to bring the sacred incense in his travels to share with friends. Then, traditional knowledge and alchemical wonders made it possible for the copal resin to be handcrafted into stick form without sacrificing its quality and beneficial properties, making the sticks ideal for sharing copal’s gifts. With the help of friends and family, Teomati’s sticks began to travel beyond close friends’ circles to be increasingly enjoyed by more people. The love of copal as a teacher and ally remains the chief inspiration to bring the white, healing smoke to all.

In particular, Teomati’s love of copal celebrates the amazing value of the Earth-based traditions of the Americas. Whenever a copal stick is lit and the white smoke accompanies a prayer, a healing session, a word spoken from the heart, a tear shed or a reconnective ritual, the wisdom kept by the native cultures of the Americas serves as a protective and guiding vessel.

Teomati Sacred Copal facilitates an enriching and soothing experience while at the same time highlighting the value of Earth-based traditions of the American continent. Through our operations, we aim at disseminating the essential wisdom kept by the native cultures of the Americas necessary to navigate our changing world while paying tribute to the Great Mystery in all.

Teomati's commitment is to make the benefits of copal available to all. But above all, Teomati is inspired to facilitate a relaxing, cleansing, and reconnecting experience with the Great Mystery. As evidence suggests, there was hardly any Mesoamerican ritual, ceremony or offering were copal was not present. Soothing and cleansing body and mind, connecting worlds, thinning veils, awakening the heart, representing the sacred-these are some of the essential qualities of copal. Experience the presence of the Great Mystery with Teomati Sacred Copal.

As you generously support Teomati, you’re contributing to the well-being of indigenous communities in México, their cultural sovereignty, and the protection of their territories.

Teomati is currently in allegiance with Ayotuxco, a Hñathö (Otomí) traditional community part of the “Holy Water Forest” that actively promotes ecological regeneration and cultural preservation. “We are creating projects that support the regeneration of our ecosystem, the conservation of our mother tongue, and our offerings to the mountains by being resilient against the monster disguised as progress.”

Ingredients: Mayan copal resin, charcoal (to keep the resin burning), and alcohol as a binder.

Use white copal smoke to relax, cleanse, and create sacred space, or as support for your contemplative practice. Each one of these unique artisanal incense sticks can last more than 90 min,* burn it all or in stages.

* Burn time of each incense stick varies due to their artisanal nature

History of Copal

Copal is the name given to the aromatic resin derived from the sap or “blood” of certain trees from the Torchwood family that hardens when in contact with the air. A process of tree selection is done by “copaleros” or experts on discriminating whether the tree is robust and healthy enough for it to “flow well” for the season. Traditionally, cuts are done on the bark of the copal tree and a maguey stalk is placed underneath to receive the resin that will turn into the aromatic copal.

Throughout Mesoamerica, and especially in Mexico, copal has a long history of use. Similar to how palo santo and palo santo incense is used in South and Central American cultures and how white sage is used in North American indigenous traditions, recent research found evidence of the use of copalli, Náhuatl term from which the Spanish “copal” derives from, in different prehispanic sites such as the Templo Mayor of the capital city of Tenochtitlan, the Cenote Sagrado in Chichen Itza, and the Laguna de la Luna in Toluca, Mexico.

Mayan copal incense was highly valued and was used in different rituals, celebrations, and offerings throughout the year. This incense was essential given the belief that it enabled communication with deities and several natural forces. Copal’s importance was such that not only survived the arrival of the Spaniards, but was adopted by them, becoming a common element in Church services.

These incense sticks, when burned, produce a white smoke that Native Mesoamericans associate with Iztacteteo or “White Gods.” These gods, in turn, are believed to aid in the communication between humans and the Great Mystery. The column of white smoke created by copal burning represents the cosmic axis out of which the universe and all its creatures emerged and acts as the connecting thread between the worlds, between heaven and earth. The burning of copal calls upon the wisdom of the heart of all things and symbolizes the Mysterious center ever pulsating toward greater consciousness and connection.

Mayan copal was also associated with the god Tlaloc (“He who Makes Things Grow”) and the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue (“She of the Jade Skirt”) both rulers of water and associated with fertility and creation. Small copal figurines representing these deities have been found in the ancient city of Tenochtitlan. This incense as an offering is related to the activation of the waters of life and the processes of creation that allow us to further explore the Great Mystery of existence. The primordial waters within us are acknowledged and honored by copal burning.

Copal’s resin was well known for its therapeutic and medicinal uses and reports suggest that it was also used as glue. Lore has it that copal’s white smoke helps with headaches and relieves diseases associated with cold and humidity. Given its positive effects on the limbic system, copal oil is used in aromatherapy to treat a number of diseases. In some cases, the resin is used in tea to treat bronchitis and applied locally for coughs and rheumatism. With many contemporary uses, copal is a true ally for body and mind.

living a life of intention and service to our community, our planet, and our fellow humans

Our journey started long ago in 1999, when a small group of close friends began learning the wisdoms of the people in the Andes. Shamanic practices, yes. But also the soulful way in which the people view and interact with the world.

When our founders took trips down to Peru, they often got asked to bring back certain items like Agua de Florida, Palo Santo, Khuyas, etc for their community. That was over 20 years ago.

Shamans Market was birthed into being as an offering for community and friends. Providing them with resources for spiritual growth. While providing our friends in the states with resources for spiritual growth, we were simultaneously providing a vehicle to financial security to our friends and their families in the Andes.

Being stewards of the earth and maintaining natural balance plays a significant role in how we run our business. We’ve essentially translated our personal worldview - living a life of intention and service to our community, our planet, and our fellow humans - into THE model for our business.

We aim to provide offerings to live in harmony with each other & our earth.

The nature of our business is thoughtful and centered on serving as a resource to YOU. From those just starting out into the practices associated with our products, and also a trusted, reliable source of goods for those who have been with us perhaps before the beginning.

We hope our products and resources are directly impacting the world in a meaningful, mindful way by helping others to reshape their worldview in new ways.

Energy Conservation and Recycling

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. At Shamans Market, we are always looking for ways to reduce our use of resources and reuse and recycle every step of the way.

Through our participation in the MIGreenPower renewable energy program, Shamans Market is directly supporting the development of new renewable energy projects in Michigan. Thus, supporting the development, construction, and ongoing maintenance/operation of our local wind and solar parks.

Our participation helps to put more clean energy onto the power grid. By making a commitment to go 100 percent renewable through the program, it reduces our carbon footprint associated with electricity use.

We reuse or recycle our cardboard, paper and packaging materials. Very little goes to waste. Many of the materials are reused in our packaging and shipping, and much of what is not, is recycled.

When purchasing supplies we are conscience of finding eco-friendly, recycled or recyclable materials for our office, warehouse use, and packaging materials.

Packaging & Shipping

Whenever possible we use recycled or recyclable products for the products we package and ship. From plant based cello bags for some of our sage and incense products to peanuts that are biodegradable we constantly have an eye out for making our products and packaging earth friendly.

✓ In shipping our products to you here are some of the ways we keep our shipping eco-friendly:

✓ Use appropriate sized recyclable or recycled cardboard boxes and 100% recycled padded paper envelopes

✓ Purchase 100% recycled/recycleable kraft paper for package void fill

✓ Use Geami’s GreenWrap instead of bubble packaging and foam peanuts. Its benefits:

• 100% recyclable, biodegradable and compostable

• Easy for you to recycle in curbside recycling bins

• Made with raw materials from sustainably managed forests & producers

✓ Wrap our products in tissue paper instead of plastic when possible

✓ Print packing slips on at least 50% recycled paper

✓ Purchase only 100% plant based compostable peanuts

✓ Reuse: Paper, boxes and peanuts that we receive product in. This sometimes means you may receive petroleum based packaging. Although we never purchase it we do reuse it. So if you get petroleum based peanuts or bubble wrap you recycle it. Hint: UPS Stores will take your peanuts for you. Find my recycling options at: at www.earth911.com .

Carbon Offset Shipping

Shamans Market has teamed up with  Camino Verde, a non-profit organization working to preserve the Peruvian Amazon. We are offering our customers the opportunity to offset greenhouse gases produced in shipping your order. Your $2 contribution will go to planting and maintaining endangered jungle hardwood trees that absorb carbon dioxide while protecting biodiversity and to preserving virgin rainforest .

The process of collecting carbon in forests, soils, geological formations and other carbon “sinks” is called carbon sequestration. Native trees and forests help fight climate change as part of their natural processes. As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into oxygen.

Camino Verde (“the green path”) is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization whose work is based in the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. It is the primary mission of Camino Verde to plant trees and encourage others to do the same. Their programs and presence in several small communities in the Tambopata River basin have focused on promoting the planting and preservation of trees as a source of sustainable income and economic empowerment to small scale subsistence farmers. Migratory agriculture is the number one cause of deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon.

It is their vision to reduce the impact of human populations on wild forests through the improved economic opportunities provided by long-term perennial reforestation and agroforestry.

Camino Verde is committed to upholding the strictest standards of sustainability, integrity, transparency, and simplicity in order to realize our goals. It is our belief that the most powerful solutions are usually simple– and always direct. In the pursuit of “beyond sustainability,” the natural world is the inspiration and model for the solutions we create. Camino Verde at a glance:

✓ Over 10,000 trees planted, representing 250 species, as part of our Living Seed Bank

✓ 180 acres (75 hectares) of rainforest under Camino Verde ownership

✓ 1600 acres (640 hectares) more protected through our conservation partnerships

✓ Over 4500 trees planted with 20 partner farmers through our Basic Agroforestry project

For more information on Camino Verde and the great things they are doing, please visit: www.caminoverdeperu.org

Eco Friendly Products

Many of the products we sell are eco-friendly. You can easily spot these items by the green eco-friendly icon on the product page. What does eco-friendly mean? Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. This term most commonly refers to products that contribute to green living, or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products also prevent contributions to air, water and land pollution. You can engage in eco-friendly habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources.

Product Qualifications
Making a truly eco-friendly product keeps both environmental and human safety in mind. At a minimum, the product is non-toxic. Other eco-friendly attributes include the use of sustainably grown or raised ingredients, produced in ways that do not deplete the ecosystem. Organic ingredients or materials are grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. Products with “made from recycled materials” contain glass, wood, metal or plastic reclaimed from waste products and made into something new. Biodegradable products break down through natural decomposition, which is less taxing on landfills and the ecosystem as a whole.
