Bells are used symbolically by the dharma traditions of Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism. The ritual hand bell symbolizes the feminine principle, the wisdom of emptiness. The accompanying dorje, also called a vajra, is the symbol of spiritual authority of the peaceful deities.
The Bell is usually held in the left hand and the Dorje in the right. To get the Bell to resonate, the Dorje has to be swirled through the inner surface of the Bell. Using the right angle gives the optimum sound from the bell.
Beautifully and intricately decorated set is crafted in Nepal.
The dorje, held in the right hand, represents skillful means, and the bell, held in the left, represents wisdom. Together these ritual implements represent the inseparability of wisdom and compassion in the enlightened mindstream. Looked at separately, each is a great treasure of spiritual meaning.
