Living Drums
With proper care, your drum can last your lifetime. Our natural drum hides contain natural oils and are meant to breathe like skin, so oiling is unnecessary. Moisture in the air causes the hide to expand and contract. Treat your drum like you would your own skin. Do not expose it to extreme temperatures, either hot or cold.
As weather conditions change, your drum’s sound will also change. In wet or humid conditions, your drum may go flat. To tighten a loose drum head, dry it slowly with a hairdryer on low, or place it in the sun or near a fire. If the heat is too hot for you, it’s too hot for the drum!
In dry conditions, such as desert climates or in the wintertime, your drum pitch will be high or tinny. To loosen the drum head, place your drum in a steamy bathroom or hold it over a pot of boiling water.
Be patient when adjusting your drum’s tone. It takes time to adjust the tone using water or heat. Protect your drum by storing it in a drum case or hanging it flat on a wall.
Do I need to oil my drum?
No. The maker suggests not oiling the natural hide drums.
What are the drum frames made out of?
Maple wood is used for the frame of the drums.
How are the drums with paintings made?
They are hand-painted and then sealed with a clear matte coat to protect the drum hides.
Can drums be used in a sweat lodge?
Although the drums are not sealed, they can be safely used in a sweat lodge. However, heat and humidity will affect resonance and tone.
