This instrument keeps ancient musical traditions alive. It was made according to traditional techniques and retains a traditional sound.

Jacaranda wood lends its extraordinary beauty to this quena flute. Crafted by hand, it is a legacy of the Inca, an indispensable instrument in today's traditional Peruvian music. Benito Tito perforates holes of different widths to ensure a sweet sound and tunes it to 440 in the key of F#. The mouthpiece is carved from cow bone and its case emulates pre-Hispanic textiles.

Each item is handmade by the artisan's partners in Peru. Due to the handmade nature, small variations in color, shape, pattern, or other characteristics may be evident. Multi-Color cases will vary. Each piece should be considered a truly unique work of art, lovingly crafted by hand.

Our fair trade, hand-carved gourd rattles are made in Central Peru. The gourds are grown in the warm Central Valleys of the Andes, the coastal oasis, and in the jungles. After harvest, they are thoroughly dried, skinned, and then sanded smooth. The designs are carved on the gourd without sketching creating many intricate designs.

Our designs vary so let us pick one for you. Gourd carving is one of the oldest art forms in Peru and dates back to 2,500 BC. Sold individually.

This zampona is a thirteen note instrument made from reeds and is called the Antara. The ANTARA is a single row of reeds rather than two. It is tuned pentatonically (5 note scale). The ANTARA is easy to play and colorfully adorned with textile fabric. Archaeological studies have shown the ANTARA to be one of the oldest instruments of Andean culture.
