    Bear Blend

Anthony Bear was given the name Singing Bear by his mother in a coming of age ceremony.  Now everyone just calls him Bear. For most of his life, he has walked a spiritual path of natural living, music and health.  He started working with herbs on his family’s organic farm in 2001 in Southeastern Ohio and was heavily influenced by a thriving local community of herbalists.  Bear developed the blend for himself and used to share it with others while on tour with his band.  Inspired after being a part of an ayahuasca ceremony in Seattle in 2006, Anthony heard the calling to share these herbs with the world.

In his words, “These herbs are a gift from our Mother to all of humanity and they have a message for everyone. I am here to share their message with you.”

What's in Bear Blend Mintz? 100% Organic Ingredients:

Mullein

 Mullein

(Verbascum thapsus) is a plant that can grow up to more than 2 meters and it is easy to find around since it grows pretty much everywhere. It can be found in all 50 states of America. Its leaves are fluffy and hairy (which can irritate the throat when drank). Mullein (verbascum thapsus) is a genus of plants containing over two hundred different species. The plants are part of the figwort family and are tall plants with small velvety flowers in an array of colors from white, orange, and red to blue and purple. Some varieties of the Mullein include great mullein, common mullein, white mullein, and golden rod. Mullein has a number of homeopathic uses. It is known for having astringent, sedative, and relaxing properties. It is often used to treat respiratory issues such as asthma and cough or colds. The herb is often gathered wild, rather than farmed. The most commonly used parts of the plant are the leaves and flowers. Mullein has long been used as an herbal remedy for respiratory problems, including asthma. It is often a common herbal remedy for ear infections, especially in people sensitive to normal antibiotic treatments. It is also used to relieve sore throat, cough, and pleurisy. The flowers are the most commonly used part of the plant. Dried and powdered Mullein is often added to smoking blends for its beneficial effects on the respiratory system.

Red RaspberryRaspberry Leaf

Red Raspberry Leaf

Historically, raspberry leaf herbal cigarettes were introduced by the Indians. In addition of treatment, herbal cigarettes were also used in religious rituals and certain events. Raspberry leaf do not contain nicotine so it can be used as an alternative for those who want to stop smoking. Raspberry leaf contains a lot of medicinal compounds such as tannins, flavonoids, ellagic acid, vitamin A, C, potassium, calcium and phosphorus. Raspberry leaf is also useful to overcome various diseases such as diabetes, menstrual disorders, fertility disorders, diarrhea and others. Raspberry is often used as a herbal tea ingredients. Benefits and Effects: An alternative for those who want to stop smoking. Neutralize poison that had been caused by the nicotine content in tobacco. Lowers blood sugar levels. Reduce pain in childbirth. Increases the fertility for men and women. Tighten the skin. Sedative and muscle relaxant.

Lavender FlowersLavenderLavender Flower is recognized worldwide for its relaxing effect on the body. It is used in calming depression, hysteria freedom from worries and concerns increases concern for your own well being and health. Relaxes when stressed, tense and mild anxiety. By inhalation, lavender is used as aromatherapy for insomnia, pain, and agitation related to dementia. Lavender flowers are soothing and provide a very gentle and delicious flavor to the blend. Lavender flowers are used in dream pillows to help inspire lucid dreams. We believe that smoking the flowers helps to encourage dreams by relaxing the mind. We use organic certified lavender flowers that are grown in Oregon and are currently looking for a good source of bio-dynamically grown lavender flowers.
MugwortMugwort LeafMugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a plant species endemic to Northern Europe, Asia and Alaska and naturalized in North America and has long been used for treating gastric and skin disorders, as a nerve tonic, and as a popular cooking additive. Mugwort smoking used to be popular among sailors looking for an alternative to tobacco, and it was used as a flavoring agent in beer before the discovery of hops (Humulus lupulus). You may be interested in smoking mugwort as a way to improve your dream recall, enhance the vividness of your dreams or reliably achieve lucid dreams, properties for which this aromatic herb is justly famous. People who have trouble falling asleep may also smoke mugwort as an effective herbal aid to help them fall asleep more quickly. In Europe, mugwort was believed in medieval times to ward against evil. The fresh plant was often given to travelers as a charm to scare off malevolent spirits and ensure them a safe journey. Roman soldiers frequently placed mugwort in their sandals during long marches to keep their feet from getting tired. Mugwort could be considered a charm in medicinal terms as well: it’s been used in both Eastern and Western herbal medicine for hundreds of years to treat disorders of the skin and digestive tract, as well as a potent calming agent and anxiolytic. Today, mugwort is coming into its own as a herb to facilitate vivid and lucid dreams, especially if you engage in mugwort smoking just before bed. On its own or smoked with another calming herb such as catnip, mugwort smoke can induce feelings of calm and mellowness lasting about 30-60 minutes, without making you feel clouded or “dumb”. Its calming actions alone make mugwort an excellent replacement for tobacco, but mugwort’s effects on deep sleep and dreaming are where things really get interesting. The active compound in mugwort is thujone, an aromatic oil also found in wormwood, the plant used to brew the alcoholic drink absinthe. Consumed orally or by inhaling mugwort herb smoke or aromatic oil, mugwort can improve dream recall and sometimes induce lucid dreams when used shortly before bed. Some people recommend smoking mugwort and taking it as tea simultaneously to enhance its effects, or wrapping fresh mugwort in an aromatic dream pillow so you can inhale its active constituents as you drift off to sleep. Many mugwort users have reported the dream pillow method to be highly effective: the effects kick in as they enter the hypnagogic pre-sleep state, generating sensations of floating or rising upward that can translate into a lucid dream or even an out of body experience!
Calendula Flower PetalsCalendula Petals & Flowers are known to bring better dreams while you sleep. Bear, the originator of the blend, believes that Calendula flowers also help to remember dreams more clearly. Lucid dreaming is an art whereby the dreamer attempts to stay conscious while dreaming. Calendula may just be the magical medicine to help get you there. However, unlike a calendula tea or salve, we carefully remove only the delicate flower petals from the calendula for this blend. These flowers embody the lightest and most ethereal part of Calendula’s qualities. The bright orange and vibrant flower petals actually help to create a fully balanced smoke blend that burns evenly and tastes smooth and delicious.
DamianaLobelia is a very strong muscle relaxant and tranquilizer that should not be mixed with any other pharmaceutical tranquilizers or alcohol. It also is an expectorant. As an added bonus it is an alternative that increases your body’s own natural defense mechanisms. All this makes it ideal as an herb to stop smoking with. Your body sees Lobelia’s main ingredient, lobeline, as nicotine. Certain receptors in your body are waiting to be filled with nicotine and so you feel nicotine fits. Lobeline is the same shape as nicotine and fits into these receptor sites, fooling your body into thinking you’ve been smoking Tobacco. Lobeline, however, is not addictive when used properly for the short term. The prescription chewing gums that doctors prescribe to quit smoking have lobeline as the main ingredient. We only use a very small amount of lobelia in the smoke blend as it is quite a potent herb, so a little goes a long way.
Rose PetalsFair Trade Rose Petals Believe it or not, but rose petals are not only one of the most sensual and delicious flowers to eat or smoke, but they are also one of the most nutritious. The incredible and vibrant color exhibited by red rose petals is an indication of its high levels of bioflavonoids and vitamin C. When smoked, the rose petals provide an almost fruity aroma that blends perfectly with the catnip and the damiana. You may never have thought to smoke rose petals, or flowers in general for that matter, but these fare trade organic rose petals will certainly change your mind. Come on, give it a try, smoke some flowers. We are certain that you will be amazed at how smooth and delicious they are.
CatnipCatnip (Nepeta cataria), which belongs to the mint family, is a perennial flowering shrub native to Europe, although it has now spread to other continents where it’s often considered an invasive weed. The plant’s main active ingredient is nepetalactone, a plant terpenoid that affects the central nervous system in both cats and humans (although in different ways). While you certainly can smoke catnip, its effectiveness varies for different people. When smoked catnip is effective, its most common effects include warming throughout the body, a general sense of relaxation and calm, and a sense of mild euphoria sometimes accompanied by giddiness. Inhaling catnip smoke can also bring on physical sensations of minty coolness, which usually spread from the back of the throat to the upper chest and persist for about two hours. Many people report that catnip sedates them and also seems to have anxiolytic action: some users say that smoking catnip helps them find calm after a long day and forget about their worries.
DamianaDamiana is a small shrub with aromatic leaves found on dry, sunny, rocky hillsides in south Texas, Southern California, Mexico, and Central America. Damiana leaves have been used as an aphrodisiac and to boost sexual potency by the native peoples of Mexico, including the Mayan Indians. The two species used in herbal healing, both of which are referred to as damiana, are Turnera aphrodisiaca and Turnera diffusa. Damiana leaves have been used as an aphrodisiac and to boost sexual potency by the native peoples of Mexico, including the Mayan Indians and is used for both male and female sexual stimulation, increased energy, asthma, depression, impotence and menstrual problems. Historically damiana has been used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and mild depression, especially if these symptoms have a sexual component. The herb is also used as a general tonic to improve wellness. Damiana has also been used traditionally to improve digestion and to treat constipation, as in larger doses it is thought to have a mild laxative effect. It is well known in southwestern cultures as a sexuality tonic and is recommended by many top herbalists. It stimulates the intestinal tract and brings oxygen to the genital area. It also increases energy levels which does a lot to restore libido and desire. In women, Damiana often restores the ability to achieve orgasm. Damiana is used primarily as an energy tonic and an aphrodisiac for both men and women. Damiana has a dual effect. It can work quickly to stimulate the genital area by enriching the oxygen supply. Longer term use can improve sexual fitness and performance. The libido-boosting power of damiana hasn’t been tested in humans, although a liquor made from the leaves has long been used as an aphrodisiac in Mexico. In animal studies, extracts of damiana speeded up the mating behavior of “sexually sluggish” or impotent male rats. It is also claimed that when drank as a tea it has a relaxing effect not-unlike low doses of cannabis.
peppermintPeppermint The health benefits of peppermint oil include its ability to treat indigestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms, as well as for pain relief. Historically, the herb has been known for its medicinal uses, and its impressively long history often gives it the prestigious title as the world’s oldest medicine. Unlike many other herbs and essential oils, numerous health benefits of peppermint and peppermint oil have been studied and proved by the scientific community. Its pleasant and uplifting flavor makes for one of the smoothest smokes too.
DamianaVanilla is a very old herb dating back to the age of the Aztecs in ancient Mexico. According to Totonac mythology, the tropical orchid was born when Princess Xanat, forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. The lovers were captured and beheaded. Where their blood touched the ground, the vine of the tropical orchid grew. Our 100% organic fair trade vanilla powder is made from raw ground up vanilla beans. The powder contains a small amount of volatile oils that, when combusted, contribute to the overall floral and flavorful aroma of the Bear Blend. Although we only use a dash in each tin, the vanilla weaves the other flavors together perfectly.
MulleinPassion Flower  Herbalists have a high regard for the soothing properties of passionflower and recommend it as a general nerve tonic to treat nervous stress, anxiety, depression & insomnia. Passionflower is used to gently relax the mind/body to prepare for a more restful nights sleep as it interacts positively with the nervous system. Many have found it to be effective for alcohol, drug and nicotine addiction withdrawal. For alcohol addiction some use in conjunction with Kudzu Root. For nicotine, people say its best with Lobelia. Used widely in Europe and the US for its effects, the Peruvians also used the flower as a sedative.

living a life of intention and service to our community, our planet, and our fellow humans

Our journey started long ago in 1999, when a small group of close friends began learning the wisdoms of the people in the Andes. Shamanic practices, yes. But also the soulful way in which the people view and interact with the world.

When our founders took trips down to Peru, they often got asked to bring back certain items like Agua de Florida, Palo Santo, Khuyas, etc for their community. That was over 20 years ago.

Shamans Market was birthed into being as an offering for community and friends. Providing them with resources for spiritual growth. While providing our friends in the states with resources for spiritual growth, we were simultaneously providing a vehicle to financial security to our friends and their families in the Andes.

Being stewards of the earth and maintaining natural balance plays a significant role in how we run our business. We’ve essentially translated our personal worldview - living a life of intention and service to our community, our planet, and our fellow humans - into THE model for our business.

We aim to provide offerings to live in harmony with each other & our earth.

The nature of our business is thoughtful and centered on serving as a resource to YOU. From those just starting out into the practices associated with our products, and also a trusted, reliable source of goods for those who have been with us perhaps before the beginning.

We hope our products and resources are directly impacting the world in a meaningful, mindful way by helping others to reshape their worldview in new ways.

Energy Conservation and Recycling

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. At Shamans Market, we are always looking for ways to reduce our use of resources and reuse and recycle every step of the way.

Through our participation in the MIGreenPower renewable energy program, Shamans Market is directly supporting the development of new renewable energy projects in Michigan. Thus, supporting the development, construction, and ongoing maintenance/operation of our local wind and solar parks.

Our participation helps to put more clean energy onto the power grid. By making a commitment to go 100 percent renewable through the program, it reduces our carbon footprint associated with electricity use.

We reuse or recycle our cardboard, paper and packaging materials. Very little goes to waste. Many of the materials are reused in our packaging and shipping, and much of what is not, is recycled.

When purchasing supplies we are conscience of finding eco-friendly, recycled or recyclable materials for our office, warehouse use, and packaging materials.

Packaging & Shipping

Whenever possible we use recycled or recyclable products for the products we package and ship. From plant based cello bags for some of our sage and incense products to peanuts that are biodegradable we constantly have an eye out for making our products and packaging earth friendly.

✓ In shipping our products to you here are some of the ways we keep our shipping eco-friendly:

✓ Use appropriate sized recyclable or recycled cardboard boxes and 100% recycled padded paper envelopes

✓ Purchase 100% recycled/recycleable kraft paper for package void fill

✓ Use Geami’s GreenWrap instead of bubble packaging and foam peanuts. Its benefits:

• 100% recyclable, biodegradable and compostable

• Easy for you to recycle in curbside recycling bins

• Made with raw materials from sustainably managed forests & producers

✓ Wrap our products in tissue paper instead of plastic when possible

✓ Print packing slips on at least 50% recycled paper

Carbon Offset Shipping

Shamans Market has teamed up with  Camino Verde, a non-profit organization working to preserve the Peruvian Amazon. We are offering our customers the opportunity to offset greenhouse gases produced in shipping your order. Your $2 contribution will go to planting and maintaining endangered jungle hardwood trees that absorb carbon dioxide while protecting biodiversity and to preserving virgin rainforest .

The process of collecting carbon in forests, soils, geological formations and other carbon “sinks” is called carbon sequestration. Native trees and forests help fight climate change as part of their natural processes. As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into oxygen.

Camino Verde (“the green path”) is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization whose work is based in the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. It is the primary mission of Camino Verde to plant trees and encourage others to do the same. Their programs and presence in several small communities in the Tambopata River basin have focused on promoting the planting and preservation of trees as a source of sustainable income and economic empowerment to small scale subsistence farmers. Migratory agriculture is the number one cause of deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon.

It is their vision to reduce the impact of human populations on wild forests through the improved economic opportunities provided by long-term perennial reforestation and agroforestry.

Camino Verde is committed to upholding the strictest standards of sustainability, integrity, transparency, and simplicity in order to realize our goals. It is our belief that the most powerful solutions are usually simple– and always direct. In the pursuit of “beyond sustainability,” the natural world is the inspiration and model for the solutions we create. Camino Verde at a glance:

✓ Over 10,000 trees planted, representing 250 species, as part of our Living Seed Bank

✓ 180 acres (75 hectares) of rainforest under Camino Verde ownership

✓ 1600 acres (640 hectares) more protected through our conservation partnerships

✓ Over 4500 trees planted with 20 partner farmers through our Basic Agroforestry project

Eco Friendly Products

Many of the products we sell are eco-friendly. You can easily spot these items by the green eco-friendly icon on the product page. What does eco-friendly mean? Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. This term most commonly refers to products that contribute to green living, or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products also prevent contributions to air, water and land pollution. You can engage in eco-friendly habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources.

Product Qualifications
Making a truly eco-friendly product keeps both environmental and human safety in mind. At a minimum, the product is non-toxic. Other eco-friendly attributes include the use of sustainably grown or raised ingredients, produced in ways that do not deplete the ecosystem. Organic ingredients or materials are grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. Products with “made from recycled materials” contain glass, wood, metal or plastic reclaimed from waste products and made into something new. Biodegradable products break down through natural decomposition, which is less taxing on landfills and the ecosystem as a whole.
