More Information

There are no essential oils distilled from copal, so it is enjoyed only as incense.

Product Origin

Indonesia

The tropical forests of Indonesia have been tapped for aromatic tree resins for centuries. On the island of Sumatra, benzoin (Styrax benzoin) is gathered by hand: harvesters score the bark, and the sap slowly seeps out and hardens into fragrant tears. Sumatran benzoin has been traded across Asia and beyond for more than a thousand years and is still burned in temples and homes today.

Indonesia is also home to the Agathis tree, whose clear, golden resin is gathered in the same patient way. This is the resin we offer as Mayan Copal.

How To Use

To use our Shamans Market resin incense, ignite a charcoal tablet, such as Swift Lite Charcoal Tablets, and place the tablet in a fire-safe burning bowl. You may either set a piece of the resin incense directly on top of the hot charcoal table or grind to a fine powder and sprinkle it on the glowing tablet.

Copal is the name for hardened tree resins burned as incense, and for thousands of years it has been sacred across Mesoamerica. Our Mayan Copal, sold under the name our supplier has always used, is Agathis resin from Indonesia. On charcoal it gives off a sweet, husky, resinous smoke.

In Mexico, copal fills churches year-round and homes during Día de los Muertos, when its familiar scent is said to guide visiting souls home.

Choose: pieces and powder, or pure powder, in the size you need.

How to burn

  1. Light a charcoal disc in a heat-proof bowl filled with sand, and wait until it glows and ashes over.
  2. Place a pea-sized piece or a pinch of powder on top.
  3. Add more as the smoke fades.

Burn in a ventilated room, never leave hot charcoal unattended, and let the bowl cool before handling.
